Kurt Hahn, inventor and co-founder of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, was born on 5 June 1886 in Berlin, Germany. The German Award will celebrate Hahn’s 125th birthday at the final evening of the 6th International Award Summer School (www.jugendprogramm.de/summer-school-2011).
For the German Award, the ideas of Kurt Hahn are still as relevant as they were on the first day – for example in terms of Award leaders training. “In Hahn’s tradition we strongly believe that to explain the Award is not enough, and that we also have to take care that its spirit can be experienced in every single seminar”, explains National Director Klaus Vogel.
Also the German Award’s Motto “Du kannst mehr als du glaubst” [Plus est en Vous – There is more in you (than you think)] is from Kurt Hahn. “Everyone to whom this tradition is important is invited to share her/his ideas and thoughts on this and thereby contribute to the anniversary”, says Vogel.
