A

A – Abbr. of Alte Bahnmeisterei

Accommodation – There are two accommodation facilities: Gasthaus Schwanen (S) and Alte Bahnmeisterei (A). German participants who have not asked us to book a room on their own expense will be accommodated in A

Activities – As a part or besides the different courses and workshops there are activities concerning all four sections of the Award

Adventure – Different “adventure aspects” of IASS 2009 are team-building activities, games & exercises (every day); journeys to the countryside during the ALC and some of the workshops; “City Bound in Heidelberg”.

ALC – Abbr. of Award Leaders Course

AOC – Abbr. of Award Officers Course

Alte Bahnmeisterei – German Award House, containing both the National Award Office (Koordinationsbüro) and the National Educational Establishment (Bildungsstätte).

Award Basics – All of the courses are based on this German Award Handbook in English language.

Award Journalism Working StationsOne of the Workshops' options. Focus is on preparing reports, interviews, personal profiles (portraits) and photographs

Award Leader – Leader of the Award team of an Award unit or group

Award Leaders Course – Constitutes the first part of IASS 2008.

Award Officer – Leader of the Award team of an Operating Authority

Award Officers Course – Second part of IASS 2009

Camera – Optional part of personal equipment

Camp beds – If you are accommodated in the Alte Bahnmeisterei building, you have the options of mattresses on the floor or camp beds. In both cases you need your own sleeping bag.

Camper – If you are accommodated in Alte Bahnmeisterei and don’t like communal bunks, you can also use your camper

Certificate – At the end of IASS 2009, each participant gets a Certificate of Participation covering the parts she / he has attended

Communal bunks – Used for accommodation in Alte Bahnmeisterei

Communication – The main means for communication is e-mail (NOT by phone, because we all are volunteers and can't answer phone during the day)

Costs –There isn’t any participation fee for IASS 2009; participants have only to pay for their insurance and travelling costs. For participants from abroad, the hotel stay (shared rooms) is also free. German participants can either use communal bunks in Alte Bahnmeisterei for free or pay for a hotel room.

Countries – To date, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Jordan, Mongolia, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Switzerland, and United Kingdom took part in International Award Summer School

Courses – Main parts of IASS 2009 are two different courses: Award Leaders Course and Award Officers Course. Experienced Award leaders can join a Train The Trainer.

 

D

Date – IASS 2009 will start on Monday, 24.08.2009 (arrival) and end on Sunday, 30.08.2009 (departure). All seminar activities will take place between Tuesday and Saturday

Embassy (German) – Participants who need a visa can get it from there or in some countries from a regional consulate. A printed list with contact details is available in the download area

Expedition – Participants of the Expedition Course supervise a Practise Expedition or Expedition of Award participants

Fitness Activities – As with the other Award sections, “physical recreation” is part of IASS 2009, because everybody can start or end his / her day with some guided physical activity. Cf. [Fitness Activities]

Folder – Each IASS 2009 participant gets a folder to collect all seminar records

Football – Optional Fitness Activity

Games – Ice Breakers, Team Builders etc. are part of IASS 2009 activities.

H

Health issues – There is a reciprocal health agreement with the UK and most EU countries, whose citizens are entitled to free medical and dental treatment on presentation of a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Nationals of other countries should take out medical insurance. Sometimes, medical practitioners will request up-front payment (especially if there is no reciprocal health care agreement)

I

Insurance – Each IASS 2009 participant has to care for his / her personal insurance. In accordance with a European Council decision, visa holders are required having travel health insurance valid for the entire Schengen area with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000.

International Evening – Highlight of IASS 2009 is the International Evening, where all participating countries will prepare “exhibition corners” and give presentations.

Interview – Preparing, conducting and writing participants‘ interviews (and as well personal profiles / portraits) is an Workshop option

Invitation Letter – In order to get a visa, more often than not a personal invitation letter is compulsory. Please register as early as possible to get it in time (it might take several weeks for the letter to arrive!).

Journalism – Done via leaning by doing interviews, portraits (personal profiles) and reports prepared during the Award Journalism Learning Stations

Kitchen duty – For each day, participants establish a Kitchen duty for preparing the meals and cleaning the kitchen; part of Summer School Service

 

L

Laptop – Optional part of personal equipment

Learning Stations – “To use learning stations, divide the class into learning teams and rotate the teams through a series of learning stations that require the teams to perform a key task related to the topic under study at each learning station” (Pearson Education, Inc). During IASS 2009, this powerful method will be both used for the basic for Expedition training (part of the Award Leaders Course) and the Journalism Workshop.

Management game – Cf. Business Simulation

Mattresses on the floor – If you are accommodated in the Alte Bahnmeisterei building, you have the options of mattresses on the floor or camp beds. In both cases you need your own sleeping bag.

Meals – Every day, all IASS 2009 participants have all meals together in the Alte Bahnmeisterei. Meals are prepared by the IASS 2009 participants themselves; cf. kitchen duty

Method – Main seminar method of IASS 2009 is “Learning By Doing”. Just like Award helpers, trainers in our Award courses are basically not supposed to act for themselves but to make the participants act.

Modules – Basic modules of IASS 2009 are different courses and workshops. Participants from Germany sometimes take not part in the whole Summer School programme, but just in one or two of its different courses or workshops

Registration deadline – Registration deadline for IASS 2009 is 05/24/2009. If you need a visa and/or a written personal invitation letter, you should register much earlier!

Report – Preparing short reports is part of the the Award Journalism Learning Stations and the Award Officers Course

S – Abbr. of Gasthaus Schwanen

Schwanen – Gasthaus Schwanen is the main accommodation venue for participants from abroad. There are just shared rooms available.

Skills activities – Main “Skills aspects” of Summer School are Award Journalism Learning Stations, International Evening, and preparation of IASS 2009 documentation

Sleeping bag – You will need your own sleeping bag if you are accommodated in the Alte Bahnmeisterei building.

We are volunteers and thus can just support concerning your visa with this link, the embassy and insurance hints and an written invitation letter together with a printed programme sent by normal mail, but can't contact any embassy from our side.
